BATMAN ON BATMAN
With the release of Scooby Doo! & Batman: The Brave And The Bold due out tomorrow, I am reminded of my conversation with Diedrich Bader, who Plays the titular Batman on the Batman: The Brave And The Bold series, and in the recent movie.
The late Adam West is the only Batman for me. Period. The many reasons why are for another article but a very close second is Diedrich Bader, star of The Brave and the Bold. The series is a somewhat comical , sometimes retro and incredibly entertaining "Meta" take on the Bat-universe. Diedrich's is the voice I hear in my head when I read Batman, the one that I try to imitate when being Batman, and he was sitting in front of me. I made it my mission to try shake his hand and ask him about the series finale.
I caught up with Diedrich as he was wrapping up a WB kids Flashback panel at Wonder-Con, of which he was a member, and stole a few moments for a few questions.
JL: You know, I just want to say, the last episode of the Brave and the Bold is the best last episode of any series, ever.
BD: Thank you.
JL: Would you mind reminding me that the Hammers of Justice are still out there keeping and eye on us? ( he smiles and nods in agreement, possibly tearing up. It was hard to tell as I started tear a little)
BD: "The Hammers of Justice are out to keep an eye on you." (He flexes and smiles as he says this and I am a 6 year old boy again and Batman is talking directly to me) That monolog is just awesome. (watch it here) Tears all the time. You know it took me take after take because it was so well written, so heartfelt that I kept crying. It was so beautiful.
JL: I can’t watch it without losing it.
BD: That was the first one that Kevin Smith saw and he thought that the show would be too jokey and thought that it’s not for him cause he’s a real Batman fanatic , you know, which is cool. Then he watched that last episode and that’s what turned him on to the whole series.
JL: And I got to imagine he cried , he blubbered.
BD: He totally did. Any one who is a real fan of Batman, it gets them. And if it doesn’t get you, your not a fan.
JL: Yeah, you absolutely right. That this reminds me of the interview you did with him ( Kevin Smith Fatman on Batman podcast. If you haven’t heard this episode of this podcast, call of work tomorrow and do it. Everyone in the house will be balling).
DB: That was really fun, I had a great time on that interview. What a nice guy he is.
We shook hands, and I ran back to my hotel room to change my underwear and start writing this down.
Best day of my life chopped down at the knees by the realization that I only got this crappie picture. That’s OK. I know the Hammers Of Justice are out to keep an eye on me.
Me.
