Whoops. Retro Cool Nerd had previously mistakenly reported that Jonah Hill had been cast in a yet to be determined role in the highly anticipated The Batman, due out in 2021. News around the inter-webs today is that Hill is officially out of the project. However the internet taketh away, but she also givith. Announced today, Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, There Will Be Blood) has been cast as the Gotham’s King of quizzes, the Riddler.
Created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang the Riddler first appeared in Detective Comics #140 (October 1948). Frank Gorshin debuted the first live action version of the now classic Bat- villain when the Batman premiered on January 12, 1966. Batman would not face another Riddler on screen until 1995’s Batman Forever with a maniacal Jim Carrey behind the Question marked cane. Played a little too much for laughs, this version did not hit with hard core fans. Which then brings us back to the small screen. Gotham would deliver us a slightly more grounded take on the character. Starting out as a GCPD forensic scientist with a penchant for puzzles Cory Michael Smith evolved into one of the more enjoyable aspects of the show.
