BREAKING NEWS: SDCC 2020 CANCELLED
Whelp, the headline says it all folks. Sadly, Fox 5 San Diego has broke the news that the pop culture spectacle, properly known as San Diego Comic Con, has decided to put things off until 20121. While it is heartbreaking for many, it is common sense for many others that we do everything we can to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus up to and including shattering my summertime dreams. 135,000 fans descended upon our fair city last year during SDCC, this year it will be zero.
Comic Con organizers made the announcement Friday morning, also stating:
“Recognizing that countless attendees save and plan for conventions each year, and
how many exhibitors and stakeholders rely upon its events for a major portion of their livelihood, (we) had hoped to delay this decision in anticipation that COVID-19 concerns might lessen by summer,” the organization wrote in a news release. “Continuous monitoring of health advisories and recent statements by the Governor of California have made it clear that it would not be safe to move forward with plans for this year.”
Although it is more, in what seems like a never ending pile of bad news, fear not badge holders. People who purchased badges for Comic-Con 2020 will have the option to either transfer their badges to Comic-Con 2021, or request a refund. You can expect emails soon, according to Comic-Con. Similarly, exhibitors will also have the option to transfer or recoup their fees.
“Extraordinary times require extraordinary measures and while we are saddened to take
this action, we know it is the right decision,” said David Glanzer, a spokesperson for the
organization. “We eagerly look forward to the time when we can all meet again and share in the community we all love and enjoy.”
